Mourinho praises 24-year-old for ‘dominant’ display against Burnley

Jose Mourinho admitted that he was delighted with the way in which his side defended during their 4-0 win over Burnley afternoon, singling out Davinson Sanchez for praise.

While Gareth Bale’s performance understandably dominated the headlines, with the Welshman bagging a brace and an assist, several Spurs fans on social media were also impressed with Sanchez’s display.

The Colombian started alongside Toby Alderweireld at the back and the pair marshalled Jay Rodriguez and Matej Vydra expertly.

As expected, Sean Dyche’s men played a lot of balls over the top for their strikers and put in plenty of crosses into the Tottenham box but the Colombian seemed to win almost everything in the air.

The 24-year-old has come in for scathing criticism for some of his recent performances but he showed today that he can be extremely solid when he is at his best.

Mourinho admitted that he was impressed with how his players defended collectively until the final whistle to secure the clean sheet.

When asked about Sanchez’ display, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “I think the team played well defensively and it was a very positive collective performance.

“Even minute 92 or 93 and two corners, and the team fighting to defend.

“Of course, Davinson played a very good game. Very dominant and fresh.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Sanchez has always possessed all the physical attributes of a top central defender but it is just the occasional lapses in concentration that have let him down.

In many ways, Burnley were the perfect opponents for the Colombian given the way they play but he deserves a lot of credit for his performance. I would expect the former Ajax man to now potentially have a run of few consecutive starts.
