Former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster does not believe Tottenham Hotspur are amongst the biggest clubs in the UK.
Tottenham Hotspur have certainly looked to change their approach in the transfer market this summer transfer window.
Spurs have looked to show ambition when going about their business. The Lilywhites have attracted some top stars, including Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Mateus Fernandes, paying big fees to get them to sign.
Tottenham have also changed their wage structure, offering more competitive salaries as opposed to a system that had salaries capped at £200,000.
One could argue that this change in strategy is Tottenham finally trying to act like a big club, but former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster is not convinced.
Ben Foster ranks biggest UK clubs – but Tottenham miss out on top ten
Speaking on talkSPORT, Foster was asked to rank the top sides in the UK at the moment. The former Watford man had several household names on his top seven list but left Tottenham out of the top ten.
Naming the top clubs in the UK, he had Manchester United in first, Liverpool in second, Arsenal in third, Manchester City in fourth, Chelsea in fifth, Aston Villa in sixth, and then Celtic and Rangers.
Asked where Spurs rank, he stated: “I think they just miss out on the top ten! There’s teams probably just bigger.”
Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League in the last two seasons; United finished sixth in 24-25, but bounced back into third last campaign.
Meanwhile, all the teams Foster named as bigger clubs than Tottenham in the Premier League have finished above Spurs in the last two seasons.
Opta rankings echo Foster’s view on Spurs’ decline
Foster is not the only one who believes Tottenham have fallen off from their usual heights. In fact, in Opta’s latest power ranking, Spurs are placed in 30th amongst the best clubs in the world.
All the sides Foster names are also ahead of Tottenham in the statistics-based website’s rankings of the best clubs in football at the moment.
Of course, from a footballing point of view, Spurs look to have lost their way, but from the infrastructure side, Tottenham remain one of the sides to reckon with.
