Opinion: The unlikely star I want to see wear the captain’s armband this season

A number of players have worn the captain’s armband for Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino, with the manager always keen to reward players for loyalty and performances.

Hugo Lloris is the current captain of Tottenham, with Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen being the vice-captains. Meanwhile, Toby Alderweireld has worn the armband on multiple occasions this pre-season. Even Danny Rose has captained the side under Poch.

However, I want to see a new player wear the armband this season for at least a few games, even if these come in the League cup when the likes of Kane and Hugo are not playing.

I believe that Heung Min Son encapsulates everything a captain should be. Talented. Positive. Well-liked among the squad and the fans. Lives and dies in the Spurs shirt. Wears the badge with honour.

Playing 188 games for Spurs, Son is now one of the most senior players at the club, racking up 67 goals in that time (Wikipedia).

The number of times I have watched him clutch victory from the jaws of defeat, lead Spurs to European wins in the absence of Kane, and kiss the Spurs badge, makes me think that no one deserves a taste of the armband more than him.
