Photo: “I thought we were friends” – Eric Dier reacts to Jan Vertonghen’s Benfica move

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has taken to his Instagram story to react to the news that Jan Vertonghen has found a new club.

The 33-year-old was unveiled as a Benfica player earlier this evening and has signed a three-year contract after leaving Tottenham as a free agent after his contract expired last month (BBC).

Dier, who came through the ranks at Sporting’s academy posted a photo of Vertonghen standing next to the Benfica club crest with a tongue-in-cheek caption: ‘I thought we were friends’ along with a heartbreaking emoji.

Sporting are Benfica’s big rivals with both clubs located in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

Dier and Vertonghen are close friends off the pitch and spend some time on holiday together following the end of the Premier League campaign having been photographed enjoying a game of chess on a boat close to sunset.
