According to a report in El Correo de Andalucía (as relayed by Sport Witness), Mathys Tel could emerge as a late target for Real Betis.
Betis are looking to add a number nine to their squad, and Santiago Giménez and Arnaud Kalimuendo are the two players who are currently at the top of their wishlist.
The Spurs man sits below the pair, and the La Liga club could ask to sign the youngster on loan. The report says that with Tottenham having no European football next season, Tel’s game time could be limited at N17.
Betis feel that the 21-year-old has a ‘strong chance’ of getting plenty of minutes under Manuel Pellegrini, which could boost his market value.
Why Spurs should never allow Tel to leave
With Wilson Odobert out injured and with a lot of uncertainty over when Dejan Kulusevski will be back and whether he will be the same player again, De Zerbi is short of reliable wide options at the moment.
Mohammed Kudus (who is also returning from a long layoff) and Tel are the only two fit wide options at the Italian’s disposal at the moment.
Even if Tottenham land both Savinho and Cody Gakpo, De Zerbi may still be hesitant to let Tel leave this summer, especially given the injury crises they have had over the last couple of years.
Not to mention the fact that Tel has been Spurs’ best performer in pre-season and looks guaranteed to start against Brentford.
