Report: Former Spurs winger close to joining Everton

Former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend is closing in on a move to Everton, BBC Sport have revealed.

Townsend came through the Tottenham academy and went on to establish himself as a regular in the first team during 2013/14 season after the club sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

He seemed destined to reach great heights at both club and international level at that point but the wide man’s career has not delivered what it promised.

Townsend left Spurs in unfortunate circumstances after a physical altercation with then fitness coach, Nathan Gardiner and he has since expressed regret at the way things ended for him at his boyhood club.

When the former Tottenham man’s contract with Crystal Palace ran out last month, some Spurs fans on social media even called for the North Londoners to bring him back to the club.

However, if BBC Sport are to be believed, the 30-year-old is now about to put pen to paper on a contract with the Toffees.

Townsend will reunite with Rafael Benitez at Goodison Park after working for a short period under the Spaniard at Newcastle previously.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am delighted that Townsend has managed to get a decent club after Palace decided not to renew his contract. At 30 years of age, he could still be a decent squad player for Benitez. However, I was certainly not among the Spurs fans who wanted the winger brought back to N17. We should be aiming higher than the former Crystal Palace man if we have genuine ambitions to get back into the top four.
