Report: PL rivals confident of signing ex-Spurs man who played in 2019 CL final

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United are confident of snapping up Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier, who has been linked with a return to Tottenham.

Trippier had four seasons at Tottenham before leaving the North London club for Atletico in the summer of 2019.

The England international struggled for form in his final season at Spurs but has rebuilt his reputation at the Spanish capital, playing a valued role in Atletico’s march to the La Liga title last year.

The Telegraph revealed last month that the Magpies have made the former Tottenham man their number one January target.

90 min then claimed that Spurs were one of several Premier League clubs to have contacted Atletico regarding Trippier and some Tottenham fans on social media were enthusiastic about the prospect of re-signing the right-back.

However, if Romano’s latest update is to be believed, the Magpies expect to complete a deal for the former Spurs man.

The journalist took to social media to reveal that negotiations are in progress between Newcastle and Atletico for Trippier, with the La Liga club now waiting for the final bid from the Magpies.

I certainly think Emerson needs some competition for the right-wing-back slot. While Trippier could prove a decent squad option to have, I suspect that Paratici and Conte might want to pursue a younger profile of player as part of their rebuild.
