According to the latest reports from Portugal, rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Tomas Tavares is keen to leave Benfica this summer.
News of Matt Doherty’s impending arrival to Spurs (Daily Mail) has been dominating the headlines for the past few days but Tavares is another right-back option the Lilywhites have been linked with recently.
The Sunday People (23/8; page 58) claimed that Spurs had identified the 19-year-old as a target after his impressive breakthrough season in the Liga NOS.
It was suggested that the Lilywhites could land the teenager for around £9million, and some Spurs fans on social media were quite receptive to the idea as long as the youngster was brought in a back up instead of as the starting right-back.
A Bola now claim that Tavares’ agent is looking for an exit route from Benfica this summer.
It is revealed that the Portuguese giants would be willing to loan the youngster out as they have sufficient reinforcement at right-back.
The report suggests that the loan deal could come with an option to buy.

Given Jose’s knowledge of Portuguese football and the fact that we signed Gedson from Benfica on a very similar deal, signing Taverns on loan does seem like a possibility. A loan deal with an option to buy would come with minimal risk. Given that we might require cover at right-back even if we land Doherty, the move does make sense.
