Report: Spurs ready shock offer for London rival player – £20m will secure the signing

The Daily Mail has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are set to make an offer for Arsenal midfielder, Ainsley Maitland-Niles this summer.

Maitland-Niles was first mentioned as a target for Tottenham earlier this month (The Sun), with some Spurs fans reacting less than enthusiastically to the rumour.

The Mail now claims that Spurs are readying their opening offer for Maitland-Niles, whose situation they have been monitoring closely.

The report reveals that Arsenal are willing to listen to offers for the 22-year-old this summer as they look to raise transfer funds for their own targets.

It is alleged that the Gunners will sell the youngster if they receive an offer of around £20 million for him.

Signing a new right-back is said to be a priority for Mourinho, who has reportedly lost faith in Serge Aurier.

Although Maitland-Niles is a centre midfielder by trade, he has operated as both a right-back and a wing-back this season. It is claimed that the Arsenal academy graduate’s versatility is viewed as a huge plus by Spurs and Mourinho.

Spurs Web Opinion

Just because we have not historically seen players crossing the North London divide too often, does not mean this deal will not go through. It is clear Arsenal want to cash in on Maitland-Niles and if it is true that Mourinho is a fan of him, one cannot rule out us making an offer. However, one would imagine that the Gunners will be intent not to strengthen a direct rival and would prefer to sell him elsewhere.
