Report: Tottenham passed up on opportunity to sign West Ham star back in 2019

Tottenham Hotspur have had a number of ‘nearly signings’ during the Premier League era, many of which have come back to haunt the club.

Would Jarrod Bowen have been a star at Tottenham?

According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur decided against signing West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen in 2019, prior to his switch to the London Stadium.

Bowen has evolved into one of the most feared attackers across the Premier League over the last few years, with the winger not just possessing an ability to run at players but also showcasing his quality in front of goal while also being one of the hardest-working forwards in the division.

That is why Gareth Southgate has decided to take the winger to the Euros and the 27-year-old could have a key role to play for England in this summer’s tournament.

It might not be too long before we see Bowen making a big-money switch to an elite side and it turns out that Tottenham quite inexplicably turned down the chance to sign him back in 2019.

Spurs turned down the chance to sign Jarrod Bowen

According to Football.London, the North London club seriously considered the option of signing the winger from Hull back in 2019.

We reported back in the same year that Tottenham’s scouts had persuaded Jose Mourinho to get on board with a deal for Bowen.

However, in the end, the club allegedly decided against the move and chose to sign Jack Clarke from Leeds United instead.

Just six months later, the Hammers ended up paying around £22m for the attacker and given how Bowen has thrived in East London, Spurs would surely be kicking themselves at not following through and striking a deal.

Bowen, Eberechi Eze and Jack Grealish are all ones who got away for Spurs, who decided to pass on all three players when they were playing in the Championship despite seriously considering moves for them.

Perhaps this is a sign that Spurs should take a few more chances on young Championship talents though.

Tottenham have made some big mistakes in previous transfer windows, no more so than in 2019 yet hopefully under the new recruitment team since the Fabio Paratici era there has been a better success rate with those who have joined the club.
