Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has finally named his captain for the 2026–27 season as Spurs enter a new era.

The Premier League season is not too far away from kicking off, with Tottenham’s first game coming against Brentford at the Gtech Stadium.

Spurs will be hoping to begin their campaign with a win as they look to avoid the debacle of last season, where they were embroiled in a relegation fight.

Pre-season has proven to be useful to Roberto De Zerbi, who has had enough time to get to know his players and instil his philosophy in them.

The Italian will now be hoping that Spurs’ preparations so far will be enough for significant improvement next campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi confirms Tottenham captain for 26-27 season

While De Zerbi will be looking to lead from the touchline, the Italian has now confirmed his Tottenham captain for the 26-27 season.

It had long been reported that James Maddison was set to take on the armband this campaign from Cristian Romero, but that is not the case.

De Zerbi has instead gone for Romero’s old centre-back partner, Micky Van de Ven as his new primary leader on the pitch, with Maddison named as the fourth in line to the throne.

  1. Micky Van de Ven
  2. Pedro Porro
  3. Ben Davies
  4. James Maddison
  5. Archie Gray

The Spurs boss said (Football London): “The new captain is Micky van de Ven. Second Pedro Porro, third Ben Davies, fourth James Maddison and fifth Archie Gray. Why five? Because I want as many captains as possible and they all deserve to be captains.”

Spurs fans has expressed their reservations about Maddison being named captain given his injury record.

Maddison could actually captain Spurs vs Brentford

With Micky Van de Ven not having kicked a ball in pre-season, Pedro Porro only just back from the World Cup, and Ben Davies unlikely to start, James Maddison could actually lead Spurs out against Brentford anyway.

However, even Maddison isn’t guaranteed to start after only playing 45 minutes against Hoffenheim. In that case, fifth in line Archie Gray would take the armband.
