Tottenham Hotspur fans have reacted to reports suggesting that James Maddison is set to become the new captain of the club.
There have been several departures from Tottenham Hotspur already this season, with six players having been sold.
For the most part, these have been youngsters, with Radu Dragusin, 24, the oldest player to have departed from north London.
Still, the expectation is that there could be more sales, with at least five players expected to be moved on from Spurs this summer.
Amongst them is club captain Cristian Romero, who made it to the World Cup final for the second consecutive time and is attracting interest from both Barcelona and Inter Milan.
With Romero’s future uncertain and there being a possibility of him being sold, the expectation is that a new captain will be selected.
Tottenham fans react to James Maddison captaincy reports
Spurs Web has already highlighted five different players that could be set to step into a leadership role next season.
However, reports from Tottenham insider szyexcl have now revealed that James Maddison is expected to be named captain of Spurs in the coming weeks as Romero edges closer to an exit.
This report has reached Spurs fans, and many are not too keen about Maddison being named captain of the squad. Several fans argued against it, given the Englishman’s injury status.
One Tottenham fan said: “I doubt he will be playing enough games for him to be enjoying the captaincy.” Another added: “Rate the choice, just might have preferred someone with better availability.”
One more commented: “Over Van de Ven? Interesting.” A fourth stated: “Could either work out a treat or the complete opposite. Worried when he gets in one of his strops, it is not going to do the team any favours.”
Another fan believes that a World Cup winner should be captain instead, writing: “Should be Porro, Madders is too injury prone and will probs be replaced next season.”
Similar thoughts were shared by another who stated: “Embarrassing. An injury-prone guy who was no help. Is getting it ahead of Porro or Micky.”
However, a few did not mind, with one fan saying: “Good, had to be him with Micky and Porro VC.” Another backed the decision, adding: “I think Maddison is the most COYS guy I have seen, this news is awesome!”
A final fan wanted it to be Pedro Porro: “If this is true, I am very disappointed it was not Pedro.”
Maddison’s injury record raises concerns
Tottenham fans are not wrong in their assessment of Maddison in terms of his availability on the pitch.
His injury record leaves a lot to be desired, as he has not had an injury-free season since moving to north London. Last term, he had to deal with an ACL injury and missed most of the campaign before returning in the latter stages.
He did help the squad in their fight for survival, with Roberto De Zerbi making it a point to have Maddison around the squad during their fight because of his leadership. That does show he can offer guidance and bring something to the team even when out.
