A shocking two-year stat about Tottenham Hotspur shows that the team has suffered from a mentality problem for a long time.
Roberto De Zerbi remarked that you cannot buy mentality from the transfer market after Spurs’ 3-0 loss to Brentford in their opening game of the season.
The Italian is certainly not the first Tottenham head coach to point to a mental malaise in the squad. He has a tough job in turning things around, and the difficulty of the task is underlined by one stat which goes back nearly two years.

Tottenham Hotspur have not come from behind to win for nearly two years
Spurs fans could be forgiven for losing hope if they concede first against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon. That’s because Tottenham have not won a single match across all competitions after going behind since November 2024.
They have conceded first 47 times since then, managing to draw 11 of those games, while losing 35. Not one single win.
This has been compounded by Spurs’ struggles to find the back of the net this season, with the Lilywhites still searching for their first Premier League goal of the campaign after six hours of football.

Spurs need to score early against Aston Villa
Tottenham host Aston Villa this Saturday and De Zerbi will be desperate to go into the international break with a win. The above stats suggest that his side needs to score first against Unai Emery’s side, as they seem incapable of fighting their way back at the moment.

The atmosphere around the stadium could also quickly become deflated and perhaps even toxic if Tottenham concede early, which will only make it harder for the players to leave that stat in the past.
