Some Spurs fans were left impressed with Gedson Fernandes’ performance in the 3-2 win over Southampton the FA Cup fourth-round replay on Wednesday.
The midfielder came on a second-half substitute replacing Jan Vertonghen with over half an hour of normal time left to play.
He linked up impressively with the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Winks played a key part in the move which led to Heung-min Son’s penalty.
The 21-year-old has been used sparingly by Jose Mourinho since joining the club last month on an 18-month loan deal from Benfica.
His only start for the club came in the first FA Cup tie against Southampton at St Mary’s last month and some Spurs fans were not impressed with the Portuguese international on that afternoon.
He also caught the eye with an impressive piece of skill shortly after coming onto the field of play on Wednesday.
My favourite moment of the Spurs match – a cheeky Gedson Fernandes flick. No lack of confidence from the Portuguese youngster! pic.twitter.com/ZS3MLjlCY7

However, many felt that he was much more influential and tidy against the Saints in the replay under the lights in midweek. Here’s how some fans reacted to the midfielder’s showing:
Premiership a whole different game to Ligue 1. Young Gedson looking better and better

Apart from the fact we were absolutely shit, it was Sess’s best game in a Spurs shirt, beating his man at every opportunity & Gedson completely changed the game when he came on

Imagine slagging the whole team off, join the ‘fan’ club.
Point was Dele was the game changer, not bang average Gedson. Hope he turns into a player I really do, but he’s a body and that’s it, we aren’t paying 60 million for this kid in 18months. pic.twitter.com/Q0rbDk3Lvo— Ell. (@elliott_bali07) February 6, 2020
Great piece mate. Gedson was really good, I thought, very nice surprise. And that rainbow flick. Why has that not gone the rounds today?

A bit like the City game. Outplayed and out fought at times but always looked dangerous on the break. Dele and Gedson came on a gave us some drive and desire.

Dele turned the game on it’s head. Gedson was very positive. Son took responsibility. Big big win!

SOTON VERDICT: Another game should've lost HT but managed to win. Son excellent assisted by tireless Lucas, Lloris important saves, Dele and Gedson helped change things, rest of team poor. Can't play 20 minutes each week with defence all over place as someone will whip us.

Spurs Web Opinion
It is still early days for Gedson at the club and it is not fair to judge him until he’s had a few months to settle into the Premier League. While he has already shown glimpses of his quality, I believe we will only start to see the best of him next season after he’s had a preseason with the side under his belt.
