‘Something you never, ever see’ – Pundit left fascinated by Ange Postecoglou’s tactics

Ange Postecoglou’s exciting brand of football has helped to reinvigorate Tottenham Hotspur and it appears that it is not just the supporters who have been left impressed.

Supporters had been left disenchanted by the tactical set-ups of former Spurs head coaches Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which relied heavily on a counter-attacking style.

Postecoglou, however, has Tottenham once again on the front foot with a high-press and the clever introduction of inverted-full-backs.

Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro have been crucial to the Australian’s tactical demands, especially when it comes to looking to break the lines in between the opponents.

Postecoglou’s inverted full-backs have been a revelation

Leicester City defender Conor Coady was at Villa Park yesterday for Tottenham’s 4-0 win against Aston Villa and was left fascinated by the impact of what the full-backs were doing against Unai Emery’s side.

The England international, who was on punditry duty for BBC Radio Five Live (10/3/24; 13:10) said live on air: “I tell you what, in this period of the game, it’s fascinating to see the way Tottenham play and the way the two full-backs come inside.

“If you look at the position of Pedro Porro now, trying to run in behind, it’s something you never, ever see from full-backs. It’s absolutely fascinating, it’s great to see live.”

Pedro Porro’s absence for the two games prior to the win over Villa was clear to see, while Emerson Royal has improved a lot since his early Spurs days, he is unable to impact the game in attacking areas in the same manner as the former Sporting player.

Tottenham now need to keep the momentum going as they push for Champions League qualification, starting with a trip to Fulham on Saturday evening.
