Steven Gerrard explains Tottenham’s biggest problem, and it involves Kane, Son, and Bale

Former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has highlighted a major issue at Tottenham that, in his view, makes it too easy for opponents to play against them.

Tottenham Hotspur have failed to carry their unbeaten pre‑season run into the 26/27 Premier League season, given their poor league form.

Spurs have played five games already this campaign and have yet to manage a win, having lost three times and drawn twice.

Such a run is unacceptable for Tottenham, especially after their close to £400 million summer spending spree.

Steven Gerrard questions Tottenham’s lack of a superstar

Aston Villa were the latest side to beat Tottenham this season, with Unai Emery’s men securing a 3-2 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Villa scored three goals first, before Spurs managed two goals as they looked to push for a late comeback.

However, it was not to be for De Zerbi’s side, and now former Villa boss Steven Gerrard has opened up on what he thinks Spurs are missing.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard claimed that the Lilywhites’ biggest issue is a lack of a superstar in their squad. He said: “What I would say, I think Tottenham have signed good quality players and you can see the squad is littered with really good players.

“But I look at this Tottenham team and I do not see that world‑class superstar. Your Harry Kane, obviously he has moved on. But if you are playing against this Spurs team or you are coming up against them as an opposition player or a coach, I think they are stoppable.

“I do not see any of the players that would strike fear into me. But you think about Manchester City. Haaland strikes fear into everyone because you know he can win a game at any given moment. You look at Chelsea’s front three – Cole Palmer, he can change a game at any given moment.

“And they are consistently doing that. Liverpool with Isak once he is fit and available. You have seen it at Newcastle. I look at Tottenham and think they have got a lot of really good players, but have they got that real superstar?”

Spurs’ new era still searching for a talisman

Heung‑min Son and Harry Kane are certainly the last two superstars the Lilywhites have had in their team. It is no surprise that the period in which the pair played together coincided with Spurs’ best years in modern history.

However, this is a new era, and Tottenham are looking to take a different approach – building a team that functions within a system rather than relying on individuals.

So far, though, that has not worked and will need time, especially given the scale of changes made over the summer.

Still, when there are players worth £100 million, £85 million and £60 million in the squad, it is hard to accept that these players are not match‑winners.
