The Lilywhites responded by backing the Italian with big funds in the summer in order to ensure they do not find themselves in a similar position again.
However, a month into the new campaign, there is little evidence that much has changed, with Spurs rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, with just two points to show from their first five matches.

Supercomputer says Tottenham have nearly a one in three chance of relegation
Opta’s Supercomputer has now revised its relegation odds after the latest round of Premier League results, and the analysis platform says that Spurs are the third favourites to go down.
The Lilywhites have been given a 30.01 per cent chance of finishing in the bottom three next season, with only Coventry City (45.14 per cent) and Fulham (42.35 per cent) having greater odds.
Even newly promoted Ipswich City and Hull City are deemed far more likely to stay up than the Lilywhites at the moment, which will be extremely concerning for Tottenham fans.
Opta’s numbers show how far away Spurs are from the top clubs
Before the start of the season, some even felt that Tottenham had a shot at qualifying for the Champions League following their summer business.
However, Opta have now put Spurs’ chance of finishing in the top five and entering Europe’s premier club tournament at just 2.23 per cent.
In other words, the supercomputer thinks De Zerbi’s men are 13 times more likely to be relegated this season than to get into the Champions League.
