Teddy Sheringham has been particularly impressed with one of Tottenham’s six summer signings, who he believes can take the club back where they belong.

Spurs have significantly strengthened their squad this summer in an aim to close the gap with the best teams in the Premier League after finishing 17th two seasons in a row.

The Lilywhites have splashed the cash to do so, having broken their transfer record twice, the latest of which was on Sandro Tonali, for whom they paid £100m to sign from Newcastle.

According to reports, the Italy international is on a £250k per week contract at Spurs, making him comfortably the highest paid player in the squad.

Teddy Sheringham applauds Tottenham’s decision to spend big on game changers like Sandro Tonali

Tonali has been criticised for lack of ambition after agreeing a move to Spurs, with some pundits alleging that his motivation is purely financial.

However, Sheringham is delighted to see his beloved Lilywhites splash the cash on a proven Premier League star, suggesting that the club’s previous strategy of signing players in the £40m-£60m range had failed.

The Tottenham legend told Come On: “Sandro Tonali is exactly the sort of signing that Tottenham Hotspur have to start making. They’ve bought a few players over the years for £40, £50, £60million and they haven’t really made the difference, in my opinion. It’s not quite worked out.

“You’ve got to go and get the players that are going to make that difference, and those are the players that other clubs want, not just the ones that are most available to you.”

Why Tonali has not reported to Hotspur Way yet for pre-season

The first group of players have reported for pre-season training, with 23 Tottenham stars spotted back at Hotspur Way over the past few days.

While new signing Matues Fernandes was part of the group, Tonali is yet to arrive at the club, with the player waiting for his work permit to be finalised following his transfer.

However, Spurs fans do not need to sweat about this as Alasdair Gold has suggested that no complications are expected in Tonali’s work permit process.
