Mauricio Pochettino has made a big revelation about his conversation with the Tottenham hierarchy last season during the club’s relegation scrap.
Many Spurs fans had been dreaming of Pochettino returning in the summer, and some outlets even suggested back in March that the Argentine was the Tottenham hierarchy’s top managerial target to replace Igor Tudor.
However, the club’s top brass chose a different direction, bringing Roberto De Zerbi through the door.
That has proven to be the right decision, with the Italian saving Spurs from relegation last season, and he now faces the big challenge of getting the club back up near the top end of the table.
Mauricio Pochettino admits Tottenham offered him a contract at a bad time
The Tottenham boss has now revealed that Spurs contacted him in March and even offered him a contract.
However, he explained that the timing was not right as he was preparing for the World Cup with the USA, but he refused to rule out a return to N17 in the future.
When asked if a return to Spurs was on the cards, Pochettino told Yahoo Sport: “The problem was that the timings were never the best. When I was free, I never received a contact and then when I was working, I received a contact. In this (difficult) moment, they called everyone – free or not free.
“If I was free, of course, I come, but I wasn’t free. I was preparing the World Cup. It was a little bit unlucky. But maybe one day the stars will align and it can happen.”
Pochettino says he would have managed Spurs in the Championship
At the point that Spurs were looking for a new manager and ended up appointing De Zerbi, relegation to the Championship looked a very real possibility for the club.
Pochettino has insisted that he would have been ready to take the Tottenham job no matter what division they were in.
When asked if he would have taken the Spurs job even if they were not in the Premier League, the 54-year-old responded: “Yes, of course. It’s the only club that always I am open to help. Whatever division. Another club, no, but Tottenham, yes.”
