Tottenham can grow from relegation battle and Eberechi Eze hijack, says Sandro

Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro has suggested that being involved in a relegation battle could do more good than harm for the North London club over the long term.

The prospect of being involved in a relegation battle was unthinkable for an entire generation of Spurs fans, who only grew up watching the club in and around the top six.

That is why it was an extremely nervous experience for Tottenham supporters to watch their side come so close to going down.

In the end, the Lilywhites stayed up due to a win on the final day of the season, with Roberto De Zerbi managing to turn the ship around just in time.

Sandro claims relegation battle offers Tottenham a chance for a reset

Sandro admitted that it was an extremely unpleasant experience watching the club he loves battle against the drop.

However, the former Tottenham midfielder believes that the experience can be beneficial to the club as it offers them a chance to rebuild and correct the mistakes they have made in the past.

Sandro told Flash Score: “I think it was important for everybody to feel the pain of being down there, because at Tottenham, we never felt that before.

“For me, I played there at Tottenham for four years and… oh my god, we were always in the top four, top five. Now, to have the feeling of nearly being relegated, it was crazy. I was dying every single game, my heart, oh my god, it was so, so difficult to be in that position this season.

“I think now it’s a chance for us to build again, and to be more thoughtful, let’s do early things, let’s track the players, let’s buy players and buy them early, because I think this season we left it until the end of the transfer market to sign everybody.

“We were there, like with (Eberechi) Eze, we were going to buy him, and then we didn’t. But we needed to buy early, so we now need to do everything earlier on before the season.”

Will the Spurs hierarchy learn from their mistakes?

Vinai Venkatesham has promised Tottenham fans that the club will change the way they operate in the transfer window after surviving by the barest of margins.

Spurs fans have been pleasantly surprised to see the club walking the talk so far this summer, with Tottenham wasting no time in starting their squad rebuild.

While the Lilywhites still have a lot of work to do this summer, the supporters have reason to be quite optimistic that things are being put right at the club.
