Roberto De Zerbi’s starting XI featured new signings Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson as Tottenham took on Getafe. Now, let’s take a look at our player ratings from Tottenham 1-1 Getafe.
The 70-minute match saw no substitutions from Roberto De Zerbi as he probably looked to simulate the load and intensity of a competitive match, but the lack of Spurs’ best players was keenly felt during the game as Spurs toiled to break down a very aggressive Getafe.
None of Mateus Fernandes, James Madison, Marcos Senesi, Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, Micky van de Ven, or Pape Sarr were included in the matchday squad.
Tottenham player ratings vs Getafe:
Kinsky hardly had to lift a glove for most of the match. The only time Tottenham’s starting goalkeeper had a chance to even make an intervention was following the defensive error made by Lucas Bergvall, which ultimately cost Spurs the goal (and even then it was a great finish that took the ball past the Czech). Instead, Kinsky showed his value to the team with his outstanding distribution. As always, Kinsky was calm and comfortable on the ball, and a few of his passes were able to bypass Getafe’s press entirely. 7
Roberto De Zerbi must see immense potential in Archie Gray, who was given the honour of wearing the captain’s armband for the second game in a row. Spurs’ skipper for the day put in a mature performance from right-back, where he hardly put a foot wrong. 7
Van Hecke was arguably the player of the match. Against a low-blocking opposition in Getafe who were content to give up space, van Hecke was able to put his best qualities on display. At his galivanting self, Van Hecke embarked on ball-carrying runs, either laying off the ball for a teammate or finding a creative angle for a line-breaking pass. He was one of the standouts on the pitch, and were it not for a mistimed intervention which failed to prevent Getafe’s goal, he would’ve earned an 8 for his performance. 7.5
Ben Davies enjoyed a comfortable match from the left centre-back position, although his qualities didn’t really complement van Hecke that well, with Davies lacking the pure athletic attributes to compensate for van Hecke’s aggression. But Davies did not make any major mistakes while also carrying a threat in attacking set-pieces, only narrowly missing out on scoring a goal from a corner. 6
Andy Robertson’s arrival brought a welcome set of qualities. Robertson is comfortably Spurs’ best crosser of the ball, making it a pity Tottenham only have one aerial box presence in Richarlison. Getafe’s right-winger found little joy in his battle against Robertson, but the Scotsman failed to truly distinguish himself either. 6
It’s tough to say whether the uncertainty surrounding Lucas Bergvall’s future at the club is impacting his performances, but the Swedish midfielder certainly didn’t cover himself in glory. His lack of defensive awareness and poor position (consistent issues in his game) cost Spurs the goal today. He was able to keep possession ticking along nicely and even threatened Getafe with a nice run and a shot on goal, but Roberto De Zerbi will be watching him closely. 5
Spurs’ superstar midfielder Sandro Tonali played as good of a game as he honestly could have. What Sandro Tonali is, is a well-rounded and incredibly athletic midfielder, a facilitator for Roberto De Zerbi, someone that raises the floor, contributes where he can and stops the team from making mistakes. Tonali did the best he could, but to truly be at his best, he needs a creative player to combine with. 7.5
If there ever is a justifiable scenario to rate the player who scored an equalising goal poorly, it’s probably preseason. I struggle to see the benefit to the team that playing Conor Galagher as the most advanced midfielder brings. He lacks the technical ability to orchestrate play and work in tight spaces, and while his out-of-possession work is undeniable, a game against an ultra-defensive side like Getafe is probably the worst time to play him. In saying all that, great goal for Tottenham’s equaliser. 6
This pre-season has made it abundantly clear that Richarlison cannot be Spurs’ starting striker come the start of the 2026/27 season. His presence in the box and heading ability were clearly apparent during the game and with a bit more luck he could ended the day with two goals to his name. But Roberto De Zerbi will need much more from his striker than what Richarlison can offer. 6
Spurs’ wingers were almost entirely a non-presence during the game. While Mikey was able to get a few good touches in, he failed to imprint himself on the game or to create a dangerous situation for the team. There is no question about his talent but he clearly needs time before he becomes the finished article. 5
Despite being one of Spurs’ standout players during the pre-season, Mathys Tel clearly had one of his off days. While his performances never lack energy or tenacity, Tel does sometimes struggle to leverage his effort to create truly meaningful attacking chances, and this was the case against Getafe today. 6
