Tottenham enquire about former Liverpool defender to replace Djed Spence

Tottenham Hotspur is in talks over signing a versatile Premier League full-back amid speculation linking Djed Spence with a departure from the club.

Spence has delivered some outstanding performances at the World Cup, and his stock has skyrocketed over the past few weeks as a result.

However, there remains a question mark over his club future, with reports indicating that the Spurs full-back is attracting interest from Premier League rivals.

The 25-year-old found himself out of the starting eleven under Roberto De Zerbi last season when both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie were fit and available, and it turns out that an exit from N17 remains a possibility for the defender.

Tottenham could replace Djed Spence with Neco Williams

Tottenham insider, Szyexcl, has now revealed that the Lilywhites have reached out to Nottingham Forest over a move for Neco Williams.

The Welsh international, who can play both full-back roles, was voted Forest’s Player of the Season last term, and has now become the subject of an enquiry from North London.

Szyexcl also added that both Lucas Bergvall and Spence could be on their way out of Hotspur Way, with a Swede emerging as a target for the Tricky Trees.

The Spurs insider wrote on X across multiple tweets: “THFC have made an enquiry for Neco Williams. Forest are currently in talks with Spurs for Lucas Bergvall. Djed Spence may also leave.”

Why selling Spence this summer may make sense for Spurs

A lot of Tottenham fans are understandably deadset against the idea of selling Spence, especially after he showcased his quality at the biggest stage in football over the last few weeks.

However, while the 25-year-old has some excellent attributes, including his athleticism and one-v-one defending, there have always been question marks about some aspects of his game, such as his passing and crossing.

If De Zerbi does not see Spence as a great fit for his system, this summer may be the ideal time to cash in on the 25-year-old, given how high his stock is at the moment.

While Williams may not have the kind of elite physical attributes that Spence does, he is a much better crosser of the ball and is more capable of making contributions in the final third of the pitch, as he showed at the City Ground last season.
