Cristian Romero’s future is expected to dominate the headlines over the coming weeks after the Tottenham defender suffered heartbreak in the World Cup final with Argentina.
While it was jubilation for Pedro Porro and Spain in New York on Sunday, as La Roja lifted the trophy for the second time, his Spurs teammate, Romero, was left licking his wounds after failing to retain the trophy with Argentina.
With the World Cup now over, one would not be surprised if there are concrete developments over the Tottenham captain’s future over the coming days and weeks.
Romero is generating plenty of interest after being put on the shop window by Spurs, and an exit from N17 feels inevitable for the centre-back.
Fabrizio Romano confidently asserts Cristian Romero ‘will leave Tottenham’
Spurs have already strengthened in central defence with the additions of Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke earlier in the window.
Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Cristian Romero’s six-year stay at Tottenham will come to an end this summer, with the journalist backing up other sources by stating that Inter Milan and Barcelona have both shown interest in the 28-year-old.
Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Cuti Romero will leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window. After this World Cup, it’s going to be time for new contacts between Romero, his camp, and Tottenham to decide about the exit. The plan is for the exit of Cuti Romero.
“Inter are interested, Barcelona are interested in case they sell a defender. So if a defender leaves, Barcelona can think about Cuti Romero. So these two clubs are there. Let’s see if more clubs join the race. But Cuti Romero is fully expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur.”
Is there any way back for Romero at Spurs?
Earlier this summer, it was reported that Romero could perform a U-turn and tell Roberto De Zerbi he wants to stay, as he feels he still has unfinished business at N17.
One man who would love to see that is Spurs legend Teddy Sheringham, who has asked De Zerbi to put an arm around Romero and convince him to remain at the club.
However, the chances of that happening appear very slim at the moment, with the Lilywhites hierarchy seemingly determined to cash in on the centre-back when his value is still relatively high.
