Tottenham Hotspur blow as Atletico Madrid make contact with Cristian Romero

Reports now reveal that Atletico Madrid have entered the race to sign Cristian Romero from Tottenham this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly grown frustrated in their efforts to convince Cristian Romero to extend his contract.

The Spurs vice-captain will enter the final two years of his deal in June, and while Spurs are prepared to offer Romero a significant pay rise, the Argentine centre-back appears to be in no rush to commit his future to North London.

With the 26-year-old yet to put pen to paper, reports surfaced recently suggesting that Tottenham could be open to cashing in on him this summer.

Tottenham’s hierarchy are said to be ready to issue an ultimatum: either he signs a new deal, or he will be sold before the new season kicks off.

Atletico Madrid keen on signing Cristian Romero

Now, fresh reports from Relevo suggest that Atletico Madrid are actively searching for a new central defender, and at the top of their wishlist is Spurs’ Cristian Romero.

Romero is reportedly open to leaving Tottenham, and initial contact has already been made with his representatives.

However, no discussions have taken place between the two clubs yet. Negotiations are expected to be complex, especially with Daniel Levy known for his firm stance in transfer dealings.

What next for Tottenham Hotspur and Romero?

If these reports are accurate, it wouldn’t be a shock. There have already been whispers about Romero’s desire to play Champions League football next season.

As things stand, Tottenham’s UCL hopes remain uncertain. They currently sit outside the top four and they need to win the Europa League to secure a spot in Europe’s elite competition.

If Romero is set on leaving, then perhaps Spurs should cut their losses and reinvest. A move for Marc Guehi, a player they pursued in January, could be revisited in the summer.
