Tottenham man admits he was envious watching Champions League this week

James Maddison has admitted that he was quite envious watching Arsenal and Manchester City competing in the Champions League quarterfinals this week, insisting that Tottenham ‘need to be in’ the competition next season.

After failing to qualify for Europe’s premier club tournament last season, the Lilywhites are aiming to go straight back into the competition.

They are currently battling Aston Villa for the final guaranteed Champions League spot and the race looks like it could go down to the wire, particularly given the challenging end to the season that Spurs have.

Tottenham’s 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United yesterday was a major blow in their hopes of finishing in the top four and will certainly have one eye on Aston Villa’s trip to Arsenal later today.

Maddison needs to rediscover his form if Spurs are to finish in the top four

Ange Postecoglou is seemingly fed up with questions about the race for fourth, insisting last week that he is more concerned about seeing progress from his side than about Champions League qualification (Football.London).

However, Maddison has now admitted that he is desperate to get a taste of the competition next season, remarking that Spurs belong in the tournament.

The England international said (via Football.London): “As a player, you don’t always share the same things but we want to be in the Champions League. I sat there last night [Tuesday] watching two huge quarter-final clashes and it’s a competition that we at Tottenham need to be in.”

It is worth remembering that a number of Tottenham’s recent recruits, including the likes of Maddison, Van de Ven, Vicario and Udogie, have not tasted Champions League football yet. So they will be quite keen to experience playing at that level and to prove themselves on the biggest stage.

Maddison needs to step up if he wants the club to play in the competition next season, his form has been awful since his injury and was again poor yesterday.
