Tottenham suffer Andy Robertson setback as Champions League semi-finalists join race

Tottenham Hotspur may miss out on a deal to sign Andy Robertson this summer despite suggestions that they have an agreement in place with the Liverpool star.

Liverpool blocked the 31-year-old’s switch to Spurs during the January window, but the Lilywhites have done some groundwork for a summer deal after the left-back confirmed he will be leaving Anfield when his contract runs out.

It was reported by Fabrizio Romano earlier this month that Robertson had already verbally agreed to join Spurs in the summer as long as the Lilywhites remain in the Premier League.

However, the Tottenham target has also allegedly held talks with Celtic, and another club has now joined the race for his services.

Atletico Madrid looking to beat Tottenham to Andy Robertson

According to The Daily Record, Atletico Madrid have reignited their interest in the Liverpool star after hearing of his plans to leave the Merseyside club.

The report explains that the La Liga club explored a move for Robertson during last summer’s transfer window, and they are now set to revive their pursuit 12 months on.

Manager Diego Simeone is a fan of the Scotland international and has told the Colchoneros hierarchy to bring the experienced full-back to the Metropolitano Stadium.

However, the report adds that while Atletico have the financial muscle to offer Robertson a lucrative deal, the move would need to suit the 31-year-old and his young family.

A move to Celtic is deemed unlikely for Robertson

The Daily Record back up what other sources have reported by stating that Tottenham are ‘already at the table’ for the Liverpool star, but a move to N17 would be contingent on the club remaining in the Premier League.

The outlet points out that Robertson has always said that he would love to play for Celtic, having supported the Glasgow giants growing up.

However, it is suggested a move to Celtic Park is ‘looking less likely’ for the Scotland international, who is generating plenty of interest from Europe’s top-five leagues.
