Tottenham Hotspur fans have good reasons to be optimistic despite seeing their side fail to score in six hours of Premier League football at the start of the season.

While Spurs fans may not have expected instant improvement from their side at the start of the season after wholesale changes to the squad this summer, hardly anyone would have predicted just how poor the Lilywhites have been in attack.

For the first time in the club’s 144-year history, Tottenham have failed to score in any of their first four Premier League matches.

Some pundits such as Jamie O’Hara have already given up on Spurs’ season, suggesting that it may be another campaign of the club being around the relegation places, but the numbers suggest those extreme reactions are uncalled for.

Tottenham can take heart from the history of clubs going four games without goals

Tottenham and Coventry City are the two clubs yet to score a league goal this season, but The Guardian have revealed that they are far from the only ones to not find the back of the net in their first four Premier League games, across the competition’s history.

There have been five previous examples of teams going goalless in their first four league matches: Crystal Palace in 2017/18, Sheffield Wednesday in 1994-95, Newcastle in 2005-06, Swansea in 2011-12, and Aston Villa last season.

Crucially, none of them were involved in a relegation battle, and the lowest any of them finished was 13th (Sheffield Wednesday).

More consequentially, Villa did not find the back of the net until their fifth league game last season, but they went on to finish fourth and win the Europa League.

History thus suggests that it is premature to jump to conclusions and make sweeping predictions so early into the campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi is confident Spurs have the quality to turn things around

The Tottenham head coach was upbeat despite seeing his side knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Liverpool on Tuesday.

De Zerbi insisted that Spurs have been unlucky in the last few matches, suggesting that their performances against Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Everton and Liverpool merited more than two draws and two losses.

The Spurs boss also suggested that he has total confidence in the quality of his players, insisting that they will start winning matches once it clicks.
