We take a look at the permutations in Tottenham Hotspur’s quest to beat Premier League relegation after West Ham’s 3-1 loss at Newcastle.

All eyes were on St James’ Park on Sunday to see if West Ham could turn the pressure up on Spurs in the battle for survival. However, the Magpies emerged 3-1 winners, which means that Tottenham are now in the driver’s seat to stay up.

Tottenham will likely avoid relegation with just one more point

Spurs sit two points ahead of the Hammers, with a game in hand over their London rivals, and they also have a much superior goal difference, with West Ham at -22 and the Lilywhites at -9.

Position Team Played MP Won W Drawn D Lost L For GF Against GA Diff GD Points Pts

17 TottenhamTottenham36 9 11 16 46 55 -9 38
18 West HamWest Ham37 9 9 19 43 65 -22 36

That means even if Tottenham get just one point from their remaining two matches and West Ham beat Leeds on the final day, there would have to be a 13-goal swing on goal difference for the North Londoners to go down.

While a win against either Chelsea or Everton would mathematically secure Tottenham’s safety, even a draw in either game would be enough, unless something unbelievably extraordinary happens.

What happens if Spurs lose both their matches?

If Tottenham are to get beaten by both Chelsea and Everton, then West Ham would need to beat Leeds on the final day to stay up.

Anything other than a win on the final day of the season will spell curtains for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, who have now lost three in a row.

Tottenham have picked up back-to-back away wins in the Premier League, and Spurs fans will be hoping that their side can finish the job tomorrow in West London.
