In Marcos Senesi, Tottenham Hotspur have one of the most impressive defenders in European football.
At Bournemouth, Senesi proved himself an asset in both boxes, chipping with in ,goals and perhaps even more impressively, assists, while also relishing the opportunity to get stuck in as a defender.
Through the 2025-26 season, Senesi ranked in the top three for the most interceptions, blocks and clearances. He also made 2,300 passes, including the completion of 182 long ones – more than anyone else in the division.
The Argentine also made more assists than any other centre back in the Premier League.
That, alone, showcases why Tottenham decided to sign him. But what else is there to his story? Here’s everything you need to know about Marcos Senesi.

How Marcos Senesi rose through the ranks
Arriving at San Lorenzo as a 13-year-old, Senesi made his way through the various age groups and into the first team.
He scored 27 goals on that journey and signed his first contract in 2016. His first-team debut followed soon after in September against Club Atletico Patronato. Then came his first goal versus Arsenal de Sarandi.
All throughout this, Senesi was establishing himself as an impressive left-footed centre-half. And, after all, left-footed centre-halves are a precious commodity in football.
Feyenoord made the first move, bringing him to the club in 2019. It brought an end to his spell with San Lorenzo, which saw 72 appearances and 1 goal.
In the Netherlands, Senesi’s development continued at pace. Playing in a possession-heavy system, he was able to develop the ball-playing of his game. He gained experience at the very top of the game in the Europa League and Conference League. That included a final against Roma.
Overall, after 116 appearances across a three-year spell, with nine goals to his name, his star had continued to rise. The Premier League had been watching. Bournemouth came calling.
Joining the Cherries for an undisclosed fee, Senesi made his debut against Manchester City as a late substitute. While that ended in a 4-0 defeat, he went from strength to strength as his Bournemouth career took off over the coming years.
In his maiden season, he scored twice – once in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle, the other coming in a 3-2 defeat at the Emirates Stadium to Arsenal.
Four goals and five assists then followed in a very impressive sophomore campaign, though a hamstring injury cut his 2024-25 season short. Still, he picked up where he left off in 2025-26, missing just one game and that was down to a yellow card suspension.
With his contract expiring, Senesi confirmed he would not be renewing it, seeking a new challenge after 128 appearances in the black and red stripes of the Cherries.
That led to his arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Why did Tottenham sign Marcos Senesi?
Following the expiration of his contract with Bournemouth, Marcos Senesi joined Tottenham in the summer of 2026.
Sporting Director, Johan Lange, listed his quality, intelligence and leadership as key things he was bringing to the club.
Lange added that his “composure in possession” and “desire to compete for every ball” were an excellent fit for the way Tottenham want to play football.
Reiterating much of Lange’s remarks, Head Coach, Roberto De Zerbi intriguingly suggested the Argentine would give Spurs “flexibility in formation”.
The man himself, meanwhile, spoke of his preference to “play with the ball”. He said he likes to have it at his feet and help the team to build and be offensive as can be. He also likes to press as high as possible.
Senesi continued: “I’ve just got that feeling of playing forward all the time. I don’t like to play too much to the sides. I just try to break the lines and try to be more offensive.”
Two nations, one player
After coming through the ranks at San Lorenzo, Senesi was called up to the Argentina U20 national team.
Playing at the U20 World Cup, Senesi played all three games in the group. He scored once, but it wasn’t enough. Argentina finished third and were eliminated.
He was called up to the U23 squad for South America’s Pre-Olympic Tournament, but Feyenoord refused to release him with it taking place in Janaury.
With Senesi now in Europe, another nation were now mulling a call-up. Even though he was born in Argentina, Senesi is of Italian descent and his impressive Feyenoord form had caught the eye of Italy coach, Roberto Mancini.
He was called up to their squad in 2022 for the Finalissima – the game between the winner of Copa America and the European Championships. The opponents? Argentina.
Argentina responded and called him up too, with Senesi opting to represent them.
He had a watching brief only as Argentina ran out 3-0 winners, but did get his first taste of international football a few days later. He came on as a substitute versus Estonia in a friendly match.
While initially missing out on Argentina’s 2026 World Cup squad, an injury to Leonardo Balerdi saw him get the call.
A footballing love story on the South Coast: Marcos Senesi’s personal life
Marcos Senesi was born in Concordia, Entre Rios, Argentina on 10 May, 1997 and he’s in a relationship with a fellow footballer: Kelci-Rose Bowers.
Having met her at Bournemouth, the pair went viral for her video of his call-up to Argentina’s World Cup squad.
