Cristian Romero will not be at Stamford Bridge to cheer his Tottenham teammates on for their huge clash against Chelsea, with their Premier League status on the line.

Spurs only need a point at Chelsea to secure their place in the Premier League following Newcastle’s win over West Ham on Sunday.

Roberto De Zerbi has insisted that Tottenham’s job is not yet done, remarking that no point comes easily in the Premier League.

However, his captain is reportedly 7000 miles away from London as his teammates prepare for a huge clash against their fierce rivals this evening.

Cristian Romero skips Tottenham’s clash against Chelsea to chear on his boyhood club

Romero has been spotted back in Argentina before this evening’s crunch clash, with the centre-back sharing on social media that he has flown back to his own country.

The 28-year-old revealed on Instagram that he had jetted off to South America with his wife and two kids to cheer on his Belgrano in their league final against River Plate on Sunday.

The Sun claim that Romero is already in Cordoba, where the big game will be played, and he will thus not be on the bench this evening at Stamford Bridge.

It has been reported that Romero chose to do injury rehab in North London to remain close to his Tottenham teammates during the relegation run-in.

De Zerbi has spoken glowingly about Romero’s leadership role at Spurs

This may be used as ammunition by Romero’s critics as a sign that he does not care about Tottenham, but that is evidently not the case.

The Spurs captain has been cheering his teammates on passionately from the bench over recent weeks, and De Zerbi has made it clear that the Argentine has been heavily invested in the club’s fortunes despite his injury.

The Tottenham boss said about his captain (via The Sun): “Cristian Romero is a big player, you know he is a big player, but he is an amazing guy because he has been a great captain in my time, even though he didn’t play. We are talking by phone, and when he stays here, every morning he came in my office and he was inside of the season.”
