Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has outlined the next steps for 20‑year‑old midfielder Lucas Bergvall following his new deal.
Despite reports from the summer claiming that Lucas Bergvall wanted out of Tottenham Hotspur in search of more game time, the Swede has now put pen to paper to sign a new deal with Spurs.
The youngster, 20, represents the future of the club and is one Tottenham want to keep within their ranks for a long time, and their trust in him has been backed by the latest contract extension.
Opening up on why Tottenham made the move to hand Bergvall a new deal, Sporting Director Johan Lange said: “Lucas is an outstanding young player with enormous potential and we are delighted that he has committed his future to the Club. From the moment he arrived, he has demonstrated not only his technical ability and intelligence on the pitch, but also the character we expect from our players.
“Lucas has a fantastic attitude to his work, he is eager to learn and improve every day, and he has become an important part of the group. This new contract is a reflection of our belief in Lucas and the role we see him playing both now and in the future of the club.”

Bergvall has been impressing in training, which led Roberto De Zerbi to praise the Swede’s effort earlier this month. The quality and talent are there, with the 20-year-old managing a clean sweep of all three individual awards in his debut season back in 2025.
However, the midfielder still has a lot of work to do if he is to improve, and De Zerbi made that clear in his latest press conference.
Speaking about Bergvall’s new deal, he told football.london: “I am delighted for the extension of his contract. He is working very well. It is difficult now because the competition, especially in his position – Tonali, Bentancur, Gallagher – are all players of high level.
“But I think at the end of the season he will play part of the game, many games, I think, and then he has to improve.
“We have to help him to improve, and he has to work like he has done, like he is doing, especially in this season. At the beginning of the pre-season he has been fantastic on the pitch.”
Bergvall confident Spurs is the right place for his development
The competition for places at Spurs, especially in midfield, is indeed high. The club bolstered their ranks in the centre of the pitch with the likes of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, with the pair arriving for big money.
Tonali looks like a mainstay in the middle of the park, while Rodrigo Bentancur is in fine form at the moment for Spurs.
The competition in midfield has seen Bergvall start just one game in the Premier League so far, and he was far from convincing as he made an error leading to a goal. Still, the midfielder believes he is in the right place to develop his talents.
He said after putting pen to paper on a new deal: “I think we are building something great here. It is an exciting time for the Club and that is why I am happy to extend my contract.
“I am always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.
“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I am getting better every day in training and I am looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”
