Djed Spence discovers World Cup squad number and it could hint at Tottenham star’s role

Djed Spence has been handed his squad number for the World Cup, and it gives a big hint regarding the kind of role Thomas Tuchel has envisioned for the Tottenham man.

Spence’s inclusion in England’s 26-man World Cup squad came as a surprise to many, given that the full-back had even lost his place in the Tottenham starting eleven towards the end of the campaign.

Tuchel cited the Spurs man’s pace and his love for one-v-one defending as reasons for his inclusion, with the 25-year-old being one of four full-backs included in the squad.

Spence has admitted it is a dream come true to be at the World Cup, insisting he never lost faith despite the lows he has had over recent years.

Tottenham’s Djed Spence may have a limited role at the World Cup

England are currently training in Miami in the lead-up to the tournament, and they have now finalised the squad numbers for all 26 players.

Spence, who wears number 24 for Tottenham, has been handed squad number 25 for the Three Lions this summer.

Given the way the numbering has been done, it is clear that the first eleven numbers have gone to the players who will likely comprise Tuchel’s starting eleven.

The Tottenham man being handed number 25 suggests he is only seen as a peripheral/cover player by the England boss, but the full-back will be hoping to catch Tuchel’s eye in training and become a more central part of his plans.

Why Spence is likely to get minutes at the World Cup

Tuchel has been very deliberate in picking role players rather than just filling the squad with the 26 best English players.

Given the tactical detail and organisation that the German coach emphasises, he will undoubtedly have options in mind for every game situation. We will likely see Spence come on when England are trying to shut shop and see out wins.

There is also the possibility that the Spurs star could be handed a start against quality opposition in the later stages of the tournament, as Spence may be the perfect option to mark a pacy winger out of the game.
