Tottenham’s total net spend this summer goes against the broader media narrative suggesting that the Lilywhites have splashed crazy levels of cash.
In terms of total money spent, Spurs’ summer window does rank among the highest by any club across a single window.
Following the arrival of Tosin Adarabioyo and Mykhailo Mudryk, Tottenham’s total spending for the summer stands at £389m for the summer window.
That has been used as a narrative to pile the pressure on Roberto De Zerbi, but the reality is that the Lilywhites have also raised a lot of cash from player sales this summer.
Tottenham have the fourth-highest net spend in the Premier League
Football Finance expert Kieran Maguire has crunched the numbers and has provided the total net spend of all 20 Premier League clubs, and the data makes for interesting reading.
As per Maguire’s figures, Spurs’ total net spend in the summer window stands at £146m. That is significantly lower than the club which tops the list, which is Liverpool, with a net spend of £218m.
However, surprisingly, two newly promoted teams, Ipswich Town and Hull City, are the second and third on the list, with net spends of £193m and £161m respectively.
Spurs’ spend could drop even further if they manage to find a late exit for Richarlison to Saudi Arabia or Turkey.
Spurs’ wage bill has increased significantly
While Tottenham may not have spent as much money on new signings as many think, the club’s overall squad cost has gone up as a result of their wage bill rising.
Among Spurs’ exits, only Cristian Romero was on huge wages, with most of the other exits not significantly reducing the club’s wage bill. In contrast, many of the club’s new signings are high earners.
Additionally, new contracts have been handed to Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro, with both now on much higher wages than they were last season.
