Alan Shearer has already outlined two reasons why Sandro Tonali could be tempted to leave Newcastle United for Tottenham Hotspur, but he would be surprised to see a deal happen.

Tottenham Hotspur remain intent on signing Sandro Tonali this summer as they look to strengthen their midfield.

It was revealed last week that Spurs had entered the race for the Newcastle man alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.

However, Tottenham wasted little time in making their move, submitting an £80 million bid that was swiftly rejected by Newcastle United, who value Tonali at £100 million.

Alan Shearer would be surprised if Sandro Tonali joins Tottenham

Spurs Web has since reported just how far Tottenham are willing to go in their pursuit of Tonali, as they aim to beat Arsenal and City to his signature.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has now spoken about the situation, offering two reasons why the midfielder might be considering Spurs. But, it’s fair to say he would be surprised by the move.

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer explained that Tonali could be attracted by the lure of London and the arrival of a new manager at Tottenham, though he admitted the club’s recent struggles make the move surprising.

He said, “Tottenham just avoided relegation. I get the attraction of London but going to Spurs who have finished so low over the last two years would be a surprise career move for Tonali in my eyes.

“But I’m not surprised if it’s true that he’s made an indication that he wants to leave Newcastle. Again, if he doesn’t want to be there, you put the price you want and if someone wants to pay it. It looks as if it’ll have to be three figures, then you say thank you very much, get the £100 million plus and you move on.

“I know Spurs have a new manager and that may be a pull for him, London, obviously. But in terms of the football club, look where they have finished the last two years.”

Why Spurs remain an attractive option for players despite recent struggles

While Tottenham have endured two difficult domestic campaigns, they still represent an appealing destination for players.

Spurs boast some of the best facilities in England, including the state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In 2024-25, they also lifted the Europa League, ending a long wait for silverware.

Over the past decade, Tottenham have challenged for the Premier League title and reached a Champions League final.

Poor management has hindered progress in recent years, but if the club follow through on their “all in” promise, they could soon be competing at the very top once again.
