A report has shed light on what Napoli are thinking about Antonio Vergara after Tottenham expressed a willingness to put money on the table for the midfielder.

It has been widely reported that Spurs are working on signing at least one midfielder this summer, and that has now become even more likely after Yves Bissouma’s departure from Tottenham was confirmed on Wednesday.

Spurs reportedly failed with a move for Vergara during the January window, and the versatile midfielder’s future continues to be the subject of much speculation this summer.

Some reports from Italy have suggested that Tottenham may reignite their interest in the Napoli star, and the Lilywhites’ interest has left the Serie A club with a big decision to make.

Napoli contemplating Antonio Vergara’s future amid Tottenham’s interest

According to Corriere del Mezzogiorno (as relayed by Sport Witness), the 23-year-old is not only on Tottenham’s radar but also Como’s.

It is revealed that the Italian side and the North Londoners were both willing to sign Vergara in January when his valuation was €30m (£26m).

The report states that Napoli find themselves in a dilemma regarding the midfielder and have a big decision to make this summer, having already spent big on acquiring Rasmus Hojlund and Alisson Santos.

It is explained that selling Vergara would help the club balance their books and aid their efforts to sign their other top transfer targets.

Maximiliano Allegri wants to keep Vergara but he may not get his wish

The update claims that new Napoli boss Maximiliano Allegri, who has taken over from Antonio Conte, would prefer to keep the Spurs target at the club next season.

Allegri has envisioned a Kevin de Bruyne-like role for Vergara in his system next season as the club eye another Scudetto tilt after finishing 11 points behind champions Inter Milan last season.

However, it is pointed out that what makes the midfielder’s sale tempting for Napoli is that he came through their academy, which means the fee they receive for him will go down in their books as pure profit.
