Roberto De Zerbi has shed light on whether James Maddison could be involved in Tottenham’s clash against Leeds this evening.

Maddison has been an unused substitute for Tottenham in their last three matches, with the attacking midfielder pushing his teammates on from the bench as the club attempts to avoid relegation.

The 29-year-old has not played since suffering an ACL injury last summer, but some reports indicate that Maddison is now very close to making his first appearance of the season.

The Tottenham boss has now reflected on the England international’s recovery and his chances of returning to the pitch soon.

Roberto De Zerbi admits Tottenham are waiting for the right moment to play James Maddison

The former Leicester star caught the eye in training ground clips this week, which has got Tottenham fans very excited.

However, De Zerbi has chosen to keep his cards close to his chest, making it clear that he and his staff have to take many considerations into account before giving minutes to the attacking midfielder.

When asked if Maddison could return against Leeds, the Tottenham boss told Football.London: “It’s not so easy. Maddison has big experience, I think he knows better than anyone when is the right moment. We have to consider we are fighting for a big target but I think he can be important for us and for that I wanted him to be with the team for Brighton, Wolves and Villa.

Radu Dragusin played 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly after he recovered from his ACL injury but De Zerbi made it clear that Maddison will not be involved in any such friendlies.

When asked if the attacking midfielder needs some competitive action behind closed doors before he is match-ready, the Italian said: “No, no. Now he stays with us until the end [of the season]. He is working very well, very hard and working with us. He reached the best condition to play.”

De Zerbi reveals whether Maddison has told him he is fit to play

A few days ago, Maddison sent a big hint on social media that he is on the verge of returning to action.

However, De Zerbi denied that the midfielder is fully fit yet, revealing that the medical staff is keeping a close eye on his progress.

When asked if Maddison has told him he is ready to play yet, the Spurs boss responded: “Not yet, but we have not spoken about his condition. Just looking on the pitch and to [hear about] his experience, my experience and the experience of the medical staff. Every day we make a check and this check is also [with] Maddison.
