Former Tottenham centre-back Sebastien Bassong has named the player he believes is the most influential at Spurs – and it’s not any of the big‑money signings.

The Tottenham Hotspur squad looks a lot different to what it was last season following their summer spending spree.

Spurs spent a whopping £394 million and brought in 10 players with vast Premier League experience, capable of competing for a spot in the first team.

The Lilywhites also shipped away twelve of their stars from N17 as they performed major surgery on their squad and looked to create a team in the mould of Roberto De Zerbi.

Sebastien Bassong names James Maddison as his favourite Tottenham player

However, despite the several exciting additions this summer, former Tottenham centre-back Sebastien Bassong has named James Maddison as his favourite player at the club as well as the most influential.

Speaking to Premier Bet, Bassong explained why Maddison’s presence could prove crucial for Spurs this season.

His comments focused on more than just the Englishman’s ability on the pitch, with Bassong highlighting what Maddison brings to the squad and the importance of having him fit and available.

He said: “Madders is my favorite, everybody knows that, because of our history together, I’ve seen him grow up. It’s crucial that he’s fit to compete, whether for a spot in the starting 11 or just to provide competition in his position, because he’s so good. He brings so much experience now, it’s funny to say that, given how many years have passed.

“He has flair and a way of seeing and feeling football that I don’t think anyone else in the squad possesses. They have so much quality, but they need a fit James Maddison for the balance of the team. Madders is so calm, he has a demeanor that a club like Tottenham really needs.

“It’s not just about his footballing quality. When Madders is around the training ground, the team is healthier. I always ask him, ‘What’s going on?’ and he’ll tell me, ‘Yeah, I’ve got this niggle, but I’m coming back.’ He’s so positive around the team, they really need a fit and ready James Maddison to play.”

James Maddison’s influence remains vital for Spurs

James Maddison’s importance to the Tottenham squad is one Roberto De Zerbi is very much aware of.

Last season, the Spurs boss recognised how influential his presence around the dressing room was and had him included in his matchday squad during the Premier League run-in even when he was not completely fit.

This season, Maddison’s influence and leadership have now seen him earn a spot amongst the club’s leadership group.

The Englishman has, of course, picked up a few knocks already this campaign, but he is now back fit and could be involved in this weekend’s clash against Everton.
