While Cristian Romero seems certain to leave Tottenham Hotspur, the centre-back’s next destination remains up in the air.
It was reported a couple of days ago that Romero has agreed terms on a long-term contract with Atletico Madrid, which is worth around worth €6m (£5.1m) per year.
A deal to take the centre-back to the Metropolitano Stadium appeared inevitable as reports indicated that all three parties were confident that Romero would move to the Spanish capital.
However, there has been another big twist in the race for the Argentine’s future over the last few hours, with Barcelona reigniting their interest in Romero after agreeing to sell Ronald Araujo to Liverpool.

SportItalia reporter Gianluigi Longari has now revealed that the 28-year-old’s entourage are keeping Barcelona informed about the ongoing negotiations over his future.
The journalist revealed that Romero’s camp remains hopeful that the Catalan club will make a move, but the La Liga champions are currently fully focused on securing a deal for Man City’s Rodri.
Longari wrote on X: “Entourage of Cuti warns Barcelona about everything that happens, because they hope that Barca will make a move. However, Barcelona’s priority today is Rodri.”
Atletico Madrid preparing second offer for Romero
With Atletico seemingly having agreed personal terms with the Tottenham man, all that is left is for them to strike an agreement with the Lilywhites to clinch the transfer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid are now preparing a second offer for Romero worth €40m (£34.2m), which is broadly in line with the bid the Premier League side accepted from Inter for the centre-back.
Given the reports of Barca reigniting their interest, one would expect Simeone’s side to send the offer swiftly and look to tie up a deal for Romero before Hansi Flick’s men re-enter the race.
