A former Premier League CEO has now accused Tottenham Hotspur of using a dangerous transfer strategy with Micky Van de Ven.

Tottenham Hotspur will definitely be hoping they can beat the drop to the Championship this season as they remain dangerously close to the relegation places.

There are two games left, but Spurs are far from safe as they only have a two-point cushion over London rivals West Ham United in 18th place.

Securing Premier League football will not only help Spurs financially but will also significantly impact the calibre of players they can attract in the summer.

Tottenham accused of using Micky van de Ven contract talks as distraction tactic

In the last few weeks, there have been a couple of positive reports surrounding certain Spurs players. Spurs Web recently reported that Micky van de Ven is now open to signing a new deal should Tottenham avoid the drop this season.

However, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has now accused Spurs of using positive transfer stories as a distraction from their struggles on the pitch.

Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness suggested Tottenham are trying to give supporters hope during a difficult period.

He said, “Spurs are putting out a lot of press stuff right now. They’re getting themselves connected with all sorts of top players if they’re going to come in, if they stay up. Micky van de Ven is going to re-sign. They’re giving such a positive spin on everything that they’re going to stay up.

“It’s almost like a distraction tactic, and they’re giving people hope. It’s dangerous. Micky van de Ven, look, he may do because Spurs will have to pay big money to keep players like that.

“They can’t have a repeat of this season, but the way that they’ve been trying to distract the fans, in my view, is very dangerous because they’re going to have to follow through on this for next season.”

Tottenham still face fight to keep Micky van de Ven

While there have been reports of van de Ven being open to signing a new deal with Tottenham, there are still suggestions linking the Dutchman with a move elsewhere.

Spurs Web recently reported that Liverpool has earmarked van de Ven as their preferred replacement for fellow Dutchman Virgil van Dijk.

The report also made it clear that competition for the defender’s signature remains strong, highlighting the level of interest in the centre-back.

It remains very likely that van de Ven stays in north London; if he does, Tottenham will have to splash the cash to keep him.
