Tottenham Hotspur are considering a shock move to sign a free agent who scored 16 times for his side last season.
Spurs have not scored in six hours of Premier League football this term, leaving many fans concerned about where the goals are going to come from.
Tottenham’s plight has not been helped by the fact that their top scorer from last season, Richarlison, has fallen out with the club and has been frozen out by Roberto De Zerbi.
While the Spurs head coach has backed Dominic Solanke to get 15 goals this season, it has now emerged that the Lilywhites are considering turning to an experienced number nine, who has played for some of the biggest clubs across Europe.
Tottenham considering signing free agent Mauro Icardi
According to a report in Cronache Di Spogliatoio (as relayed by LaLazioSiamoNoi), Spurs are considering a shock contract offer to Mauro Icardi, who is currently a free agent after his contract with Galatasaray ran out at the end of last season.
The 33-year-old striker scored 16 times for the Turkish club last term, and it is revealed that De Zerbi’s men view the experienced striker as a possible solution to their goalscoring woes.
The report claims that Icardi is also attracting interest from Lazio, who are attempting to bring the striker back to Serie A.
The outlet adds that the Argentina international will not ‘accept just any offer’, and is looking for ‘an ambitious project’, having already rejected several advances.
Signing Icardi will not send the right message to Spurs’ forwards
De Zerbi has repeatedly insisted that his current Tottenham squad has the quality to get goals, and has sung the praises of his forwards.
Having done so, it will certainly not send the right message to the likes of Omar Marmoush and Solanke if Spurs decide to sign a striker off the free agent market.
It would indicate bad squad planning and perhaps may even be viewed as an admission from the club that they got some recruitment decisions wrong in the summer.
