Ledley King has made an interesting comparison when discussing the impact that Andy Robertson could make at Tottenham Hotspur during the upcoming season.
Robertson’s arrival has perhaps gone a bit under the radar, given the other big players Tottenham have signed this summer, who are very much in their prime.
However, Roberto De Zerbi is thrilled to have the Scot added to his squad, backing him to bring character and leadership to the dressing room.
This has been seconded by the experienced Ben Davies, who is convinced that the former Liverpool man’s experience will be invaluable for Spurs, as they embark on a new project.
Ledley King says Andy Robertson can have similar impact to Edgar Davids at Tottenham
Tottenham legend Ledley King likened the arrival of Robertson to the club’s signing of Edgar Davids back in 2005.
The Dutchman joined Martin Jol’s Spurs squad on a free transfer, and although he was not at his best during his stint at White Hart Lane, he was part of the squad that secured two fifth-placed finishes and arguably started the club’s upward trajectory.
King recalled the mentality that Davids brought with him to North London and fully expects Robertson to do the same.
He told The Athletic: “Edgar, in terms of what he’d won, definitely had an impact on us as a young group at the time. Andy, I’m sure, can have that on the group. You know what it takes to win, setting the standards, and Edgar definitely did that, so I can see that similarity.
“Edgar had been at (big) clubs and won trophies. Immediately when he came into the building, the first question that he asked me when we sat down at lunch was, ‘Can we win things?’ That was his mentality straight away. I think he helped a young group of players become better players by his standards on the training pitch and after training. He spent a lot of time with young players.”
King was not surprised by Djed Spence’s showing at the World Cup
Djed Spence is attracting plenty of transfer interest after his outstanding displays for England through the summer, and many Tottenham fans do not want to see the 25-year-old sold.
King also admitted that he rates the full-back highly, insisting that those at Spurs were not surprised by the former Middlesbrough man’s performances at the World Cup this summer.
When asked about Spence, the Tottenham legend responded: “I thought Djed was really good. He surprised some people away from Tottenham, probably. It didn’t surprise me, as I’ve seen him throughout the season, so I knew what he brings to the table.
“I thought he grew into the tournament and gained confidence, and the tackle was a great one. As defenders, you’re always taught to run back as hard as you can, and I think when you’re a defender of Djed’s speed, you always believe that there’s a chance to get back.”
