Tottenham Hotspur’s injury crisis could be down to just four players once James Maddison returns in the next two weeks.
Tottenham Hotspur were reminded of exactly how ruthless the Premier League can be in their league opener against Brentford when they suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat.
The weaknesses in Roberto De Zerbi’s side were laid bare as Brentford ripped Spurs apart and could easily have walked away with an even bigger victory.
A lack of fitness, a toothless attack and a team still getting to know one another were among some of the obvious issues exposed in De Zerbi’s first outing of the 26-27 season.
Of course, fitness has long been a problem at Tottenham, and heading into the second week of the new season, several players remain sidelined.

Tottenham injury update: Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and others
We now provide an injury update for every sidelined Tottenham player, revealing when each is likely to return to action.
Against Brentford on the opening weekend, Tottenham were without seven players. The usual suspects were on the list, with Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons all out.
Kulusevski and Kudus have already returned to outdoor training, with head coach Roberto De Zerbi even revealing that Kudus is not too far from being involved in matches.
“Kudos is almost ready, that is a big point for us,” De Zerbi said last week, adding: “It’s important also the management of the players, when the players have some problem, we have to stay calm, don’t take risks.”
Spurs fans could see the Ghana international make a return against Nottingham Forest on September 5, 2026. However, for the likes of Kulusevski, Odobert and Simons, a return is expected to take much longer.
| Injured player | Injury | Potential Return |
| Wilson Odobert | Knee | November 2026 |
| Dejan Kulusevski | Knee | September 2026 |
| Mohammed Kudus | Quad | Soon |
| Xavi Simons | Knee | 2027 |
| James Maddison | Shoulder | September 2026 |
Spurs fitness concerns deepen as key players face short-term doubts
Tottenham also have players who are not out for the long term. James Maddison featured against Brentford, coming on in the second half, but picked up a shoulder injury after landing awkwardly following a challenge. Maddison is expected to be out for just two weeks.
Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven were not included in last weekend’s matchday squad due to fitness concerns. De Zerbi revealed that Tottenham’s new captain, van de Ven, was dealing with a minor injury, while Porro lacks match fitness after returning late to pre-season camp following his World Cup-winning run.
Both players will be on the bench for Tottenham against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
