Tottenham’s search for more goals has reportedly led them to Anfield, with the club now stepping up their interest in a proven Premier League attacker.
De Zerbi has already admitted that he wants to build a new Tottenham team, and one area he will undoubtedly be looking to strengthen is the attack.
Across the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, Tottenham’s six recognised forwards managed just 21 league goals between them, and that was one reason why the club battled relegation towards the end of the campaign.
With Harry Kane and Heung-min Son no longer at the club, Tottenham currently lack a reliable, established goalscorer capable of consistently converting chances while also remaining available week after week.
The Lilywhites have wasted little time exploring the market, with names such as Marcus Rashford, Omar Marmoush and Dusan Vlahovic all linked in recent weeks. Now, another high-profile target has emerged.

Tottenham are preparing a formal approach for Cody Gakpo
We previously reported that Tottenham were interested in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, who endured a dip in form last season but still managed to register 15 goal contributions across all competitions.
Now, according to the latest information from CaughtOffside, Spurs are leading the race for the Dutch international’s signature and have internally discussed a package worth around €70 million (£60.4m).
The report claims that no formal offer has been submitted yet, but plans are already being put in place behind the scenes, with Newcastle United and Bayern Munich also said to be monitoring the situation closely.
CaughtOffside add that talks are likely to intensify after Gakpo’s involvement with the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup, after which Tottenham are expected to make a formal approach.
Cody Gakpo may be open to a fresh challenge
While Gakpo is not actively pushing to leave Liverpool and has yet to make a final decision on his future, he is uncertain about what lies ahead following Arne Slot’s departure.
The Dutchman is believed to have concerns over his role under new manager Andoni Iraola, particularly with 17-year-old exciting academy prospect Rio Ngumoha expected to feature more prominently next season.
From Liverpool’s perspective, there is no desire to force the former PSV Eindhoven forward out of the club, having signed him for around £37 million in 2022.
However, Gakpo is not considered untouchable at Anfield. Reports suggest Liverpool would be prepared to listen if a significant offer arrived.
