Tottenham Hotspur’s special connection with the World Cup continues as Spain overcame France to book their place in Sunday’s showpiece final.
Opta considered France the favourites to lift the World Cup, but Les Blues were humbled at the hands of Spain with the help of a Tottenham star.
Pedro Porro rounded off another fine all-round display by netting his second goal of the tournament, ensuring that his nation reached the final for just the second time in their history, and the first time in 16 years.
The Spurs right-back can now start to dream of being crowned World champion, but his club teammates stand in his way.

Tottenham player guaranteed to win the World Cup for the third time in a row
Spain’s win over France has now guaranteed that a Spurs player will lift the World Cup for the third consecutive time in a row.
The other two semifinalists, England and Argentina, also have Tottenham representatives in Djed Spence, Cristian Romero and Marcos Senesi.
Romero was part of the Argentine side that lifted the World Cup in Qatar, breaking the South American nation’s 38-year wait for the trophy.
Four years before that, in 2018, Spurs legend Hugo Lloris captained France to the trophy as they overcame Croatia in the final.
The only question is who out of Porro, Spence or Tottenham’s Argentine pair will have the bragging rights when they return to Hotspur Way ahead of the new season.
Cristian Romero will not be a Spurs player for long
While the Tottenham captain will be focused on helping the Albiceleste retain the trophy they won four years ago, his club future remains up in the air.
Romero is expected to depart Spurs this summer after the Lilywhites strengthened the heart of their defence with the additions of Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.
In fact, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Romero’s World Cup performances have piqued the interest of several big clubs, and De Zerbi’s men may hope that a bidding war ensues for the 28-year-old.
