Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the departure of one of their Europa League-winning defenders after his late request to leave the club was followed by a move to the Premier League.
Following Tottenham’s weekend defeat to Newcastle United, in which the Austrian was not involved, Roberto De Zerbi revealed that Kevin Danso had told him he wanted to leave the club this summer.
Sunderland were subsequently the main club to show interest in Danso, with the Spurs’ backup defender keen on more regular first-team football and having agreed to the move.
However, the transfer was dependent on Tottenham finding a replacement for the 27-year-old before allowing him to leave.
Spurs have since agreed a deal to sign Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo, with the club’s official announcement now the only thing standing in the way of his arrival, allowing Danso’s move to Sunderland to go ahead.

Tottenham Hotspur have now officially confirmed that Danso has joined Sunderland on loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season.
The agreement also contains an obligation to make the move permanent if certain performance-related conditions are met.
The club confirmed the Austrian’s departure in a statement, which read:
“Kevin Danso has joined Sunderland on loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season.
The deal also includes an obligation, subject to performance related conditions, to make the move to the Black Cats permanent next summer.
Arriving initially on loan from Ligue 1 side RC Lens in February, 2025, the Austria international joined us permanently ahead of the following campaign and made 52 appearances in our colours, scoring once.
Capped 36 times for Austria, Kevin was part of his country’s Euro 2024 squad before featuring four times at the 2026 World Cup.

David Ornstein reveals Kevin Danso transfer details
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has since provided further details on the ‘performance related conditions’ referenced in Tottenham’s announcement, with Sunderland reportedly paying a £2.5million loan fee for Danso.
According to Ornstein, the obligation to buy is worth £22.25m and will be triggered if Sunderland retain their Premier League status this season.
Should the deal become permanent, Danso is then set to sign a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
