As the transfer window enters its final two weeks, Tottenham Hotspur have now taken a significant step towards the pursuit of Liverpool star Cody Gakpo.
While Gakpo continues to be named as one of Roberto De Zerbi’s top attacking targets, despite all the speculation, the Lilywhites had not taken any concrete steps towards the Dutchman’s signing.
In fact, The Athletic revealed earlier this week that Spurs had not gone beyond reaching out to the 27-year-old’s representatives so far.
The report claimed that Tottenham had not even touched base with Liverpool to enquire about the transfer, but it looks like that has now changed.
Tottenham formally express interest in Cody Gakpo
With the new campaign just over a week away, it appears that Spurs are now stepping up their pursuit of the Liverpool man.
This is according to Voetbal International reporter Joost Blaauwhof, who revealed that De Zerbi’s men have reached out to the Reds to express an interest in Gakpo.
He confirmed that Spurs’ interest in the Dutchman is independent of their pursuit of Savinho, but added that it will be a ‘difficult transfer’ for the North Londoners to complete.
In two separate posts, Blaauwhof wrote on X: “Tottenham Hotspur has formally expressed interest in Cody Gakpo to Liverpool. Any potential arrival of Savinho at Spurs is entirely separate from the situation surrounding Cody Gakpo. Roberto De Zerbi has other roles in mind for the attackers from Manchester City and Liverpool. Difficult transfer, but the Oranje international remains a very important target.”
Will Liverpool greenlight Gakpo’s sale?
Over the last couple of weeks, it has been reported that Liverpool have not shown any interest in coming to the negotiating table for the 27-year-old, even though the player is willing to join Spurs.
It was reported by journalist Pete O’Rourke a few days ago that the Reds would need to make multiple additions to their attack to put Gakpo up for sale.
The journalist also added that Spurs have to put more than £70m on the table to have any chance of clinching a deal for the former PSV Eindhoven star.
