Tottenham Hotspur have wasted little time showing their ambition in the transfer market this summer, but just 24 hours after agreeing a club-record deal for Mateus Fernandes, Spurs look set to smash that record once again with an eye-watering move for Sandro Tonali.

Thus far this summer transfer window, no club has shown as much intent as Spurs, who seem to be on a signing spree.

So far, five new signings have come through the door, with four defensive recruits and one marquee midfield addition in Mateus Fernandes, with whom Spurs have agreed an £85 million deal with West Ham United over.

It had long been reported that Tottenham were still working on a separate deal for Sandro Tonali despite the signing of Fernandes, with the Lilywhites pushing hard over the last few hours.

Manchester City stood as Spurs’ biggest rivals for a deal, but it now seems that, just hours after beating Manchester United to Fernandes’ signature, Tottenham have beaten yet another Manchester club to a deal.

Tottenham agree Sandro Tonali deal that could reach £100m

According to David Ornstein, an agreement has now been reached between Tottenham and Newcastle United for a deal involving Tonali.

The switch from the Magpies to Tottenham is expected to cost a staggering £92.5 million, plus a further £7.5 million in potential add-ons based around multiple Champions League qualifications.

The Italian has long been coveted by Spurs, who have now landed their preferred target, making the 26-year-old their sixth signing of the summer.

That now takes Tottenham’s spending to a whopping £236.5 million so far this transfer window, well above the £170.6 million spent last summer.

Spurs expected to flex their ambition even after Tonali deal

With a mouth-watering £99.5 million deal, Tonali is now set to become Spurs’ record signing.

He takes that record from Mateus Fernandes, who held it for just 24 hours as Tottenham continue to move with great intent this summer.

It has been revealed that Spurs are not stopping with a deal for Tonali, with forwards and wingers still on their shortlist.

Tottenham are expected to begin pre-season preparations on 10 July, and with six players now through the door, they all look set to be involved in preparations ahead of the 2026-27 season.
