Tottenham have now stepped up their pursuit of Cody Gakpo after making contact with Liverpool over a move for the Dutchman.
Tottenham Hotspur have been busy all through the summer transfer window and have already secured the signings of six players.
Jan Paul van Hecke, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi all stand as midfield and defensive reinforcements for Roberto De Zerbi’s men.
However, despite their £237 million expenditure, reports have it that Tottenham are still in the market for new signings. Spurs’ attention is set to turn to forward additions with the transfer window set to close in less than a month.
Tottenham make contact with Liverpool as Cody Gakpo considers move to north London
Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo is one of the wide forward options on the radar of the Lilywhites. De Zerbi’s side have had the Dutch international on their list of options for most of this summer.
However, with the Premier League season fast approaching, Spurs are looking to ramp up their pursuit of the 27-year-old.
According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Tottenham are said to have begun concrete talks with Gakpo and have also made contact with Liverpool.
The journalist further reports that a few of his sources have denied that any agreements have been reached, although a move to Spurs is described as a ‘serious’ option for Gakpo.
He wrote on X: “Tottenham are in very concrete talks with Cody Gakpo and have already made contact with Liverpool. #LFC However, as sources close to the player currently denies that any agreements have been reached. A move to Spurs is nevertheless a serious option for Gakpo”
Spurs need wide depth as injuries mount
Tottenham do need depth out wide given the injury crisis De Zerbi currently has to contend with. Ahead of the Premier League season, Mathys Tel stands as the only recognised left winger at the club.
That is because Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons remain sidelined following their ACL injuries last season. The signing of Gakpo will give the Spurs an extra option to call on.
The Liverpool forward is also versatile enough to fill in as a false nine and a striker, allowing De Zerbi more tactical flexibility when setting his team up next season.
