The Lilywhites’ first friendly, a behind-closed-doors fixture against MK Dons at Hotspur Way, is now just five days away, with the match set to take place on 22 July.
Several players have since returned to pre-season training, including a number of youngsters who are working with Roberto De Zerbi.
Amongst them are Luca Williams-Barnett, Harry Byrne, Tye Hall and Rio Kyerematen. These four youngsters have been training with the senior side at Hotspur Way over the last few days.
Several of those names will already be familiar to supporters, but Byrne is perhaps less well known. We have now taken a closer look at exactly who he is.

Harry Luke Byrne is regarded as one of Tottenham’s brightest academy prospects and has steadily progressed through the club’s youth system since joining at the age of seven.
Born on November 20, 2007, Byrne is 18 years old and represents the Republic of Ireland through his family despite being born in Croydon, England.
A naturally left-footed player, Byrne primarily operates at left-back but is also capable of playing in central midfield or as a box-to-box midfielder, giving him valuable versatility.

One of Byrne’s standout qualities is his excellent left-footed delivery, both from open play and set-pieces.
He is technically gifted in possession, remains comfortable building attacks from deep and possesses the tactical intelligence to step into midfield when required.

He made his Under-18 debut in 2023 before helping Spurs lift the Premier League Under-17 Cup during the 2024-25 campaign.
His performances also earned him his first Republic of Ireland Under-19 call-up during the 2025-26 season, with Tottenham rewarding his development by handing him a new long-term contract in March 2026.
Why Harry Byrne is training with Tottenham’s first team
Byrne’s involvement in first-team training on July 16 represents another encouraging milestone in his development rather than an indication that a senior debut is imminent.
With several first-team players still absent following the World Cup, Roberto De Zerbi has used pre-season to assess a number of academy prospects alongside his senior squad.

There is still room for Byrne to continue developing, particularly physically against senior opposition, while greater consistency over a full Under-21 campaign and further improvement in one-on-one defending against elite wingers will only strengthen his case.
The 2026-27 season looks set to be an important bridge year in his career. Byrne is expected to continue playing for Tottenham’s Under-21s while regularly training with the senior squad, with domestic cup opportunities or a future loan move both possible depending on his progress.
