Tottenham haven’t had a Premier League penalty in so long, we don’t really know who the current taker would be. But we have narrowed down five leading contenders.
Tottenham Hotspur and penalties probably would not go in the same sentence these days, given that they were not awarded a single spot kick throughout the 25/26 Premier League campaign, despite there being a few occasions when they had a strong case for one.
The last time Tottenham were awarded a penalty came on the final day of the 24/25 season against Brighton, when Dominic Solanke stepped up and converted from the spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
For an away penalty, you would have to go considerably further back, to the summer of 2023, when Harry Kane, arguably one of the finest penalty takers the game has seen, scored in a 1-2 defeat at Villa Park.
Tottenham have managed a complete overhaul of their squad during the recently concluded summer transfer window, spending close to £400m on 10 signings while allowing 19 senior players to leave.
So, with a whole host of new faces now at the club, does that change who takes penalties?
Tottenham’s five best penalty takers ranked by career record
Tottenham may no longer have Harry Kane, but they still have a number of players who have built up a strong record from the spot.
Spurs Web have shortlisted five candidates from the current squad, ranked by the likely order of priority.
1. Dominic Solanke
Having joined Tottenham from Bournemouth for a then club-record £65m in the summer of 2024, Dominic Solanke was the second-choice penalty taker behind Heung Min Son during his first season at the club.
However, the pair actually took the same number of penalties the following campaign: 3 each, and Solanke converted all 3 of them.
The England international would likely be the first-choice penalty taker whenever he is on the pitch, particularly given his previous experience in that role at Bournemouth.
Across his career, Solanke has taken 17 penalties in all competitions and scored 15 of those.
2. Omar Marmoush
Omar Marmoush brings plenty of experience from the spot following his arrival from Manchester City, initially on loan with a £50m+10m obligation to buy next summer.
The Egypt international was one of City’s penalty options behind Erling Haaland during his time at the Etihad Stadium and was handed one opportunity, in the 2024/25 FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.
Notably, Marmoush took the penalty despite Haaland being on the pitch, but unfortunately missed it as City went on to lose 1-0.
His record elsewhere is considerably stronger. Marmoush was Eintracht Frankfurt’s first-choice penalty taker and converted all 7 of his penalties for the German club. Across his career, he has taken 11 penalties and missed twice.
3. Mohammed Kudus
Tottenham were awarded four penalties last season, all in the Champions League, but only one came in a match where Mohammed Kudus was on the pitch.
That came in the 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague in the group stages, with the Ghana international stepping up to take it and converting from the spot.
Although Kudus never took a penalty during his two-year spell at West Ham United, he has still taken 7 penalties across his career for Spurs, Ajax, Nordsjaelland and Ghana, missing just once.
4. James Maddison
James Maddison was Tottenham’s designated second-choice penalty taker behind Heung Min Son for the 23/24 season (before Dominic Solanke joined), but he has never actually taken one for Spurs.
The England international could have done so against AZ Alkmaar in the 24/25 Europa League, but he selflessly handed the ball to Richarlison despite being the player responsible for taking it.
Across his career, the Spurs vice-captain has taken 9 penalties, scoring 7 and missing 2.
5. Xavi Simons
Xavi Simons may be fifth on this list because his ACL injury is expected to keep him out for a large part of the season, but his record from 12 yards is certainly worthy of consideration.
Two of Tottenham’s four penalties in the Champions League last season were taken by the Dutchman, against Atletico Madrid and Slavia Prague, and he scored both.
Simons has an excellent record across his career, having converted 13 of the 14 penalties he has taken.
